Shellway support

How can I help?

Answers to the questions people ask most. Shellway also has a full help guide built in: open Help in the app on any device. It works offline.

Getting started

How do I add my first server?

Create your vault, then choose New host. Enter the address, port and user name, and pick a password or key. The first time you connect, Shellway shows the server's host key fingerprint and asks you to trust it.

How do I use an SSH key I already have?

Go to Keychain, choose Import key and select or paste your private key. If it has a passphrase, save the passphrase with the key. Then pick the key in the host's settings.

How do I get my public key onto a server?

In Keychain, choose Copy public key and add it as a new line to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.

Sync and backups

How do I sync between my Mac, iPhone and iPad?

Put the vault in iCloud Drive (Settings → Vault and sync). On the other device, install Shellway, sign in to the same Apple ID with iCloud Drive turned on, and unlock with your vault password. Shellway finds the existing vault.

Sync isn't updating
  • Check iCloud Drive is on for the same Apple ID on both devices and that Shellway is allowed to use it.
  • iCloud can take a minute or more to copy files. Opening the Files app or Finder can nudge it.
  • Settings → Vault and sync must say iCloud Drive on both devices.
Can I undo a change or restore an older copy?

Yes. Shellway keeps the last 10 versions of your vault. Go to Settings → Backup versions and choose Restore. The current state is kept as a backup first, so a restore can itself be undone.

I forgot my vault password

I'm sorry, but it can't be recovered. The vault is encrypted with your password on your device and there's no account or server that holds a copy. If Touch ID or Face ID is still turned on for the vault on one of your devices, unlock there and change the password straight away in Settings → Change vault password.

Connections

"Connection refused" or "timed out"
  • Check the address and port in the host's settings.
  • Check the server is running SSH and that a firewall or VPN isn't in the way.
  • If the host uses a jump host, connect to the jump host on its own first.
"Authentication failed"
  • Check the user name shown as Login in the host's details.
  • For key logins, check the server's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys contains the key's public part.
  • Some servers turn password logins off (PasswordAuthentication no).
"Host key changed"

Shellway blocked the connection because the server's key is different from the one you trusted. That can mean the server was reinstalled, or that someone is in the middle of your connection. Check with whoever runs the server before you trust the new key.

Shellway Pro

Pro isn't unlocked after reinstalling or on a new device

On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings → Shellway Pro and tap Restore purchases while signed in with the Apple ID that bought Pro. On the Mac, check the licence key in Settings → Shellway Pro.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases made in the App Store are refunded by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Still stuck? Email me

Tell me which device and system version you're on, the Shellway version, what you did, and the exact message you saw. A screenshot helps. I usually reply within two working days.

Never send your vault password or private keys, to me or anyone else. I will never ask for them.
